Baseball Drops Season Opener In Corning

The baseball team fell to Jefferson CC 14-8 in their season opener Thursday afternoon in Corning. Game two was called due to poor weather conditions.

The Cannoneers jumped out to a 5-1 lead after one inning of play, tacked on six more runs in the second inning and three in the third for a 14-1 lead. Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth inning before the Hornets' bats started connecting in top half of the fifth inning for seven runs. Unfortunately it wasn't enough, with snow coming down and temperatures dropping the decision was made to call the game in the bottom of the fifth.

In all, Broome had eight hits on the afternoon, Kyle Balmer (Maine, NY/Maine-Endwell) and Austin Beck (Vestal, NY/Vestal) each went 2-3 to lead the way. Dylan Barton (Greene, NY/Greene) took the lose for the Hornets and Benjamin Wilcox earned the win for the Cannoneers.

SUNY Broome plays two doubleheaders this weekend in Syracuse, both against Onondaga CC. Game one is scheduled to begin at 1:00 P.M. on both Saturday and Sunday.
