Baseball Sweeps Four Games Against Corning

The baseball team played a doubleheader against Corning on Monday and Tuesday, winning all four games.

The Hornets were on the road for Monday's doubleheader. They emerged victorious in eight innings in game 1, 9-4, and landed a convincing 8-2 win in seven innings in game 2. 

Broome returned home on Tuesday for the second doubleheader vs the Red Barons, coming away with a walk-off 8-7 win in seven innings in game 1, and earning a 10-6 win in six innings in game 2. 

On Monday, the visiting Hornets took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning of game 1 before Corning would tie it up to take it to extras. Broome followed with five runs in the top of the eighth for the 9-4 win. Game 2 saw Broome score four runs in the top of the first and maintain control throughout.

Tyler Sienko delivered 5.2 innings on the mound, striking out 5 batters in game 1 on Monday. Jacob McTigue closed out game 1 and then pitched a complete game in game 2 in under 75 pitches. He struck out four batters and walked none. Trevor Dennison had 2 RBI and a home run and a triple across the two games Monday. Kobe Dela Cruz had a monster day, going 3-6 with 5 RBI. Nicholas Ragonese had 4 hits in 8 at-bats on the day, driving in 2 runs. Joseph Miller collected 3 RBI across the two games. 

Back at home on Tuesday in game 1, ahead 5-3 entering the top of the sixth, Broome surrendered four runs to Corning in that half-inning and subsequently trailed 7-5. The Hornets answered with a two-run bottom of the sixth to tie it at 7-7. The Hornets' aggressive baserunning induced a walk-off balk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to win 8-7. In game 2, Broome jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but trailed 6-3 entering the bottom of the sixth. The home team would explode for seven runs in that half-inning to earn a 10-6 advantage and that was the final score after the game was called after that inning due to darkness.

Peyton Farrell recieved the starting nod in game 1 and pitched five quality innings, registering 3 strikeouts. Thomas Contrata closed the game out to earn his second win of the season. Thomas Ricci allowed just 1 earned run across four innings in game 2. Daniel Crowley earned the win in that game upon Broome's sixth inning comeback. Contrata totaled 3 RBI across the two games on Tuesday, Jack Symons, Crowley, and McTigue tallied 2 RBI, and Dennison drove in a run. Six Hornets had multi-hit efforts on the day. 

This four-game sweep across Monday and Tuesday brings Broome to 5-2 on the season. The Hornets will continue a busy week by taking on Niagara County CC at home on Thursday for a 2:00 PM/4:00 PM doubleheader.
