SUNY Broome baseball hosted #5 Hudson Valley on Thursday, May 1 and lost both games despite challenging the Vikings.
The Hornets matched the Vikings in pitching and fielding in the first game, but ultimately lost 4-0. In the second game, Hudson Valley pulled away to turn a 5-1 game after five innings into a 12-1 final.
Game 1: SUNY Broome 0, #5 Hudson Valley 4
The two teams combined for only eight hits as both sides showcased phenomenal pitching. While Broome was held scoreless, the game ultimately came down to the 4th and 6th innings where Hudson Valley scored one and three runs, respectively.
Kobe Dela Cruz and Carmelo Alessandro secured the only two hits for the Hornets. Alessandro's was a double. The Hornets left five runners on base in the loss, striking out 10 times.
Michael Albertine threw a stellar game for SUNY Broome, entering the 7th having allowed only one run. In all, he gave up three earned runs on six hits in 6.1 innings of work, walking none and striking out one.
Game 2: SUNY Broome 1, #5 Hudson Valley 12
Hudson Valley plated two runs in the 2nd and three runs in the 4th. The Hornets scored a run in the 5th on an RBI single by Evan Persbacker to move within 5-1.
The first five innings were relatively competitive as Broome was going stride for stride with the Vikings but just struggled to cash in in the runs department. The Vikings pulled away, however, after scoring five runs in the 6th. Broome left 13 runners on base in the loss.
The Hornets managed just two hits in the contest, the single by Persbacker and a single by Connor Normile Jr.
Nicholas Ragonese opened the game for the Hornets on the mound and pitched a scoreless 1st inning. Joseph Chermak took the loss despite a solid performance of allowing just one earned run over 2.0 innings of work. Persbacker allowed five runs in relief.
