Men Win In Double Overtime

The Hornets won their second straight MSAC contest on Wednesday night, this time on the road at Corning CC in double overtime 78-70. Broome played strong defense for the second game in a row, again holding their opponent under 60 points in regulation. The Hornets trailed by 3 at halftime 29-26 but came out strong in the second and built a 6 point lead early and held it until the final minutes before the Red Barons would tie it up at 58 all at the end of regulation.

In the overtime sessions Matthew Bowman and Matthew Gaydorus came of the bench to impact the game. In the first OT Bowman had two big assists to William Mason who scored 6 hard earned points and pulled down some huge rebounds but once again ended in a tie at 67-67.

In the second OT, Gaydorus opened the scoring with a 3 pointer but that was answered right back by the Red Barons. With the game now tied at 70, Broome fed the hot hand as Gaydorus would hit another 3 to go up by 3. Broome was able to come up with a big defensive stop before Gaydorus would increase the lead to 6 with another 3-pointer. The Hornets would come up big again on defensive end as Adolphus Butts would secure the ball and nail 2 free throws to ice the game for good with 7 seconds to play. All-in-all the Hornets were able to outscore the Red Barons in the final frame 11-3.

Scoring for the Hornets was led by Mason with 19 points, he also had a team high 14 rebounds and 3 blocks. Butts also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to go along with 5 assists and 3 steals. Another great all around game was turned in by Chris Smith who finished with 11 points, 9 boards, 4 assists and 5 steals. Dashown Nelson added 14 points, James Saunders had 12 points and 3 blocks and Gaydorus added 11  points, 9 of those were 3-pointers coming in the deciding final OT session.

The Hornets are back at it Thursday night in the final home contest of the year against Davis College in he Baldwin Gymnasium at 8:00 p.m.
