Hornets Win Thriller At The Buzzer

Sean Webb's coast-to-coast layup sat on the rim before falling in as the final buzzer went off to give the Hornets a 79-77 win over Northampton CC in the Baldwin Gymnasium Thursday night. SUNY Broome held their largest lead of 15 points at halftime, 48-33. But the game would not be decided that easily. The Hornets would start out strong, pushing to a 14 point lead about halfway through the first 20 minutes, after a 13-0 run over a 4 minute span. They would hold the lead and push it to 15 by the break. First half scoring runs were led by Corey Bryant with 12, Adolphus Butts with 10, including two of Broome's only three, 3-pointers for the game, and Brady Harrington, who scored all 6 of his points in the first half.

The next 20 minutes was a different story. The Spartans leading scorer Jerrel Burke, who sat most of the first in foul trouble, would hit two 3's to open the second half and another Spartan basket would force Broome to take a timeout. The 8-0 run closing the deficit to 7, 48-41. Over the next 10 minutes, Northampton would outscore the Hornets 27-11, to take their largest lead of 9, 68-59, with under 8 minutes to play. Now it was Broome's turn to respond, which they did with their own 20-9 run to close the game. The late surge was led by Anthony McNeil who was relentless in his determination to get to the basket. Terry Solomon who once again played a big part in the Hornets defensive stands. Bryant who continued his strong play by pulling rebounds and finishing in transition, and Webb, who capped an 11 point second half, with the basket that would finally, with :00 seconds left on the clock, give the Hornets back the lead that they had lost.

Bryant finished with a big double-double, totaling 20 points and 11 rebounds. McNeil scored 17 and added 8 boards, Webb contributed 16 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists, and Butts would throw in 11 total points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Solomon would add 4 points, 6 boards and 2 steals, to his strong defensive effort.

Broome concludes it's Fall semester with an away game at Adirondack CC on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
