Men Win Home Opener

Broome player going up for a layup
vs SUNY ESF

The Hornets marked their first notch in the win column with a 70-62 non-league home victory against visiting SUNY-ESF on Saturday afternoon.

Broome fell behind 8-2 out of the gate, but after a timeout, they would tie the game with back to back 3 pointers, by Reginald Vaughan and Rotimi Salami, who saw his first collegiate start.  The first half score was back and forth, with many lead changes and ties, until about the two minute mark when a Cameron Snow 3-pointer, assisted by Ricardo Fernandez, sparked an 11-3 Hornet run to end the half.  The first twenty minutes closed at 38-32 in favor of the Hornets.

The early second half was a lot like the first, with 5 lead changes in the first 12 minutes.  Late in the second frame the Mighty Oaks took a 58-52 lead.  For the last eight minutes Broome would close the game on an 18-4 run capped off by Vaughan, who in the last three Hornets possessions went 2-2 from the line, turned a steal into a layup, and had another 2-2 trip at the line.  On the defensive end of the ball, Broome held ESF to just 4 points during that run.

Vaughan would lead all scorers with 24 points, including four 3-pointers, and a perfect 8-8 shooting from the free throw line, he also added 4 steals in the contest.  Also in double figures for the Hornets was Snow with 13 points, and three 3 pointers of his own.  He would also add 4 assists and 4 rebounds.  Fernandez turned in a very active 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and a block to go along with his 7 points.  Charles Jackson, in his Hornets debut, was one point shy of a double double, with 9 points and 11 rebounds, also adding 3 assists, and Patrick Buchinsky grabbed 9 rebounds of his own.

The Hornets look to continue their success at home on Tuesday night, when they host Columbia-Greene CC in a Region III matchup scheduled to tip ay 8:00 P.M.
