Hornets Erase Double-Digit Deficit And Win Region III Battle

The men's basketball team trailed by double digits early in the first half on Sunday, but came back to take the lead and hang on for an 84-79 win over Fulton-Montgomery.

After digging themselves into a hole to start the first half, a gradual rally by the Hornets made it a 36-29 game with 2:35 left to play in the stanza. Braeden Davis connected on a three-pointer to bring the Hornets within two, and then Amauri Truax made two free-throws to tie the game at 39-39 entering the half.

A Truax three-ball at the beginning of the second half finally moved SUNY Broome ahead, 42-40. The Hornets extended their lead to 55-47 within the opening minutes of the half, and were up 72-66 with just over four minutes left to play.

Fulton-Montgomery put together a gradual rally of their own in the second half. Similar to the comeback by the Hornets in the first half, the Raiders kept chipping away and got it to a 77-73 game with 1:50 left in regulation. Then they cut the lead to 79-76 with 53.5 seconds to play, and then 81-79 with 19.4 seconds left. However, Broome would score the final three points of the contest to put the game away and hang on to an 84-79 win.

Four Hornets reached double-digit scoring, led by Truax with 26 points and six assists. Connor Green just missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds. Dejon Williams had 11 points, six rebounds, and two assists. Davis also had 11 points on 3-5 shooting from three-point range.

SUNY Broome shot 50% from the field and 47.8% on threes in the win, improving to 5-8 on the season. The Hornets have now won three of their last four games and will look to continue that momentum when they visit Onondaga CC on Wednesday.
