Alex Toppin had three goals and two assists to lead Broome (1-1) past Mohawk Valley 8-2 Wednesday evening at home.

MJ Maerkl, Mike Sniffen and Kevin Cullen each scored a goal in the first period to build a 3-0 lead over the Hawks. Toppin then accounted for all but one goal in the second period to give the Hornets a 7-0 lead to start the third. Zach Moore and Aaron Hammes scored for the Hawks in the third period while Connor Lofgren scored the lone Hornet goal in the last period for the 8-2 win.

Joe Pettinelli had 38 saves for the visitors and Joakim Axen had 26 stops in goal for the host team. Broome travels to Union College in Schenectady this Saturday for a 4:00 p.m.
