Men's Soccer Team Hangs On For Home Win

The men's soccer team was able to hang on for the 3-2 win over Mohawk Valley CC in a Region III soccer match at Alumni Field this afternoon. The tightly fought, physical contest against the visiting Hawks was good enough for their third win of the season. The Hornets opened up the scoring halfway through the first when Joshua Wlostowski (Vestal, NY/Vestal) found Andrew Spencer (Cherry Valley, NY/Cherry Valley-Springfield) with a through ball that split two defenders in the box and was poked past a charging Hawks keeper into the side netting. The Hornets quickly followed up with a second goal in the 27th minute when Michael Rodriguez-Lopez (New York, NY/HS for Environmental Studies) took a shot on the Hawks keeper, who parried it wide but into the path of the oncoming Nathan Mansfield (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay-East Fishkill) who buried the ball into the back of the net for the 2-0 lead. Mohawk Valley would have their response a few minutes later in the 30th when a failed clearance by the Hornets landed at the feet of Belmin Hrnjicic, who shot it past Tyler Elliott (Vestal, NY/Vestal) in the Hornets net for their first goal of the contest. The Hornets led at the half 2-1. In the 83rd minute Mohawk would tie the contest when Alhemeedi Hamad lobbed the ball into the Hornets net for a 2-2 scoreline in the closing stages. The Hornets would have the final and decisive goal on the day when Christian Rosics (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) played a long ball into the box that bounced around but found its way into the path of Wlostowski who knocked it in for the 3-2 final.

The Hornets take their 3-2 record on the road this Saturday to Saranac Lake for a 2:00 PM match against the North Country CC Saints.
