Softball Splits In Dryden

The softball team picked up their first win of the season against Tompkins Cortland CC, winning game two 18-9 on Thursday. In game one the Hornets jumped out to a 3–0 lead in the top of the first. Cassidy Phillips led the game off with a double followed by a walk to Tia Birtch to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Ashley Lomonaco loaded the bases with a single. Desiree Parry hit a sacrifice fly to right that advanced all runners and scored Phillips from third. Shelby Pettersen drove a single up the middle for two RBI's to end the scoring in the first. The Panthers bounced back in the bottom of the inning with 5 hits including a home run to tie the game at 3. At the end of the fourth and the score 8-6 in favor of the host team, the bottom of the fifth saw TC3 explode for 6 runs on 6 hits to end the game in 5 innings 14–6.

In game two the Hornets had to play catch up from the start. Down 1-0 after the top of the first, once again Phillips led off with a double and scored on a single by Lomonaco. The Panthers then took a 4–1 lead in the second off a 3-run shot. In the bottom of the third the Hornets scored 5 runs on 4 hits, highlighted by a 2 RBI single by Amanda Finch to take a 6-4 lead. Once again TC3 fought back to tie it in the fourth at 7. In the bottom of the 5th the Hornets started the inning with 3 singles followed by a double by Phillips that brought 2 runs in. Tia Birtch's RBI single wrapped up the scoring for the inning giving the hornets a 10–8 lead. After holding TC3 scoreless in  the top of the sixth the Hornets sent eight batters to the plate scoring all eight to end the game 18–8.  The inning was highlighted by Lomonaco's grand slam to end it.  

Lomonaco was 4–4 in game two with 5 RBI's and Finch was 2-3 with 3 RBI's in game 2.  For the day Phillips was 5–8 with 3 doubles 2 singles. In game two, Birtch recorded her first collegiate win on the mound.

The Hornets return Home this Saturday for a doubleheader against Hudson Valley CC beginning at 1:00 p.m.
