Softball Overpowered In Opener

@ Genesee
@ Genesee

The softball team traveled to Batavia on Wednesday afternoon for their long awaited season opener, and fell to Genesee CC in both games of their doubleheader. After numerous games postponed due to the weather and poor field conditions, the Hornets (0-2) finally got on the field but the Cougars (5-5) offense was to much, dropping game one 15-5 and game two 15-0.

In game one Genesee got out to a 5-1 lead after two innings of play before Broome responded with 4 runs in the top of the 3rd inning to tie the game at 5-5. Jolene Krom (Sidney, NY/Sidney) led the charge with 3 hits, including a triple. Katelyn Page (Conklin, NY/Susquehanna Valley), Cassidy Phillips (Afton, NY/Afton) and Cassandra Serowik (Marathon, NY/Marathon) had two hits each and Samantha Henkiel (Vestal, NY/Vestal) contributed with a hit. Mackenzie Weber came up big for the Cougars, hitting two home runs, driving in six runs and scored three runs.

In game two Broome managed just four hits, two by Henkiel, and one each from Krom and Serowik. Weber came up big again for Genesee, this time on the mound by way of a four-hit shutout.

Riley Smith (Bainbridge, NY/Bainbridge-Guilford) pitched both games and had five strikeouts for the Hornets in her collegiate debut on the mound.

Rain and field conditions once again postponed a game, this time Thursday afternoon's game against Mohawk Valley fell victim to the weather. Sunday afternoon's doubleheader against Erie CC at the BAGSAI Softball Complex is scheduled to begin at 1:00 P.M.
