Softball Splits Home Opener

The softball team split their home opener with Tompkins Cortland CC on Thursday, taking game one 10-4 and losing game two 7-4. This was the first win for both the Hornets and the Panthers, each team moved to 1-7 on the year.

Cassidy Phillips (Afton, NY/Afton) came up big for Broome, she went 2-4, crossed the plate twice, and knocked in 4 runs via a double and home run. Jolene Krom (Sidney, NY/Sidney) had three singles in four at bats, Katelyn Page (Conklin, NY/Susquehanna Valley) went 1-2 with 3 RBIs and Paige Finch (Kirkwood, NY/Susquehanna Valley) went 2-4 at the plate. Riley Smith (Bainbridge, NY/Bainbridge-Guilford) earned her first win of the year and struck out five batters in the process.

Game two saw the bats go silent at crucial times, stranding a runner on third in the seventh and leaving the bases loaded in the fourth. Erin Page (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) took the loss on the mound but went 4-4 at the plate, including a triple in the seventh inning. Miranda Groover (Susquehanna, PA/Susquehanna) went 1-3, her lone hit went yard in the fifth. Phillips continued to hit the ball well, going 2-4 with two RBIs. Monica Luke (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) went 2-3 and scored twice. Panthers' catcher, Quincy English had the hot bat for the visitors, sending two balls over the fence in left-center.

The Hornets travel to Herkimer, NY on Saturday morning for a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 A.M. against the Generals.
