The softball team was swept by Corning CC on Thursday afternoon at BAGSAI, 11-2 in game one, and 11-4 in game two. The Red Barons, currently ranked 2nd in Region III Division III, put up 4 runs in the top of the first inning before the Hornets responded with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Unfortunately for the host team, that was all the production they would get in game one while the visitors would put up 6 more runs in the third and another in the fourth. Miranda Groover (Susquehanna, PA/Susquehanna) led Broome with 2 hits and, Cassidy Phillips (Afton, NY/Afton) and Ailnairis Belefanti (Curacao/Juan Pablo Duarte) picked up a hit apiece. Riley Smith (Bainbridge, NY/Bainbridge-Guilford) took the loss for Broome.

Behind Smith's pitching in the second game, Broome took Corning the distance, but the seventh inning proved costly for the young Hornets. The Red Barons led after the fifth, 3-0 before timely hits by Broome would tie it at 3 all going into the last frame. Hits by Hayley Knorr (Otego, NY/Unatego Central), Katelyn Page (Conklin, NY/Susquehanna Valley) and Jolene Krom (Sidney, NY/Sidney) led the comeback bid. Three Hornet errors and a homerun by Corning's Sam Menning, her second of the game, led to an 8-run inning by the Red Barons. The Hornets would only get one of those runs back and end their chances of upsetting the softball power. In all, seven Hornets would get hits in the balanced offense, led by Knorr with two hits and Krom with two RBIs. Smith totalled 4 strikeouts and walked only one in the game.

Up next are two home games this weekend, Saturday against Monroe CC, and Sunday against Mohawk Valley CC. The doubleheaders begin at 1:00 P.M. both days.
