The softball team opened the season in New Jersey over the weekend with a doubleheader against Camden County College on Saturday. The Hornets dropped game one against the Cougars 7-4, and fell in game two 13-6 in the non-regional contests.
The opener saw Broome get on the board in the top of the first behind the hitting of Madison Lapinski when she drove in Laurel Pernesky-Currier and Mikayla Garbarino on her double to left-center. Camden responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. Lapinski, Keyairra Woolfolk and Taylor Voorhis all singled in the sixth to drive a run across the plate. Alea Tiffany reached on an error to start the seventh and scored on Lapinski's third hit of the day but that would be end of the visitor's rally.
The second game saw the host team take a 1-0 lead after one before the Hornets would come back with two of their own in the top of the second for a 2-1 lead, courtesy of a two out Kendra Decker single that drove in Voorhis and Saralyn Lee. Broome held on to that lead until the bottom of the fourth when some fielding miscues and timely hitting saw five runs come across the plate for the Cougars. The Hornets closed the gap in the top of the sixth when Tiffany, again, reached on an error, followed by Garbarino's base on balls, Lapinski's second double of the day and capped off by Abby Mancini's single to draw within two runs, 8-6. Another five-run inning by the Cougars and a scoreless seventh by the Hornets ended the visitors chances of splitting the doubleheader.
The Hornets were led by Lapinski with 4 hits on the afternoon and 4 RBIs. Decker, Voorhis and Mancini had 3 hits each, and Pernesky-Currier and Tiffany chipped in with two hits each. Woolfolk took the loss in both games for Broome.
Broome will travel to Herkimer College on Tuesday, April 2nd for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 P.M. against the Generals.
