Softball Picks Up Two Wins In Auburn

The softball team earned two wins on the road Tuesday afternoon against Cayuga CC by scores of 4-2 in game one and 10-8 in game two.  Abby Mancini jumped on the first pitch of the first game for a leadoff double and scored off another double, this one off the bat of Keyairra Woolfolk to put the visitors up by one.  Allie Heeman drove in Woolfolk for a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, that lead would hold until the top of the sixth when Taylor Voorhis lead off with a walk and scored on a basehit from Saralyn Lee.  Broome added another run in the top of the seventh when Voorhis drove in Laurel Pernesky-Currier with a single.  The Spartans were held scoreless through the first six innings before threatening in the bottom of the seventh with two runs.  McKenna Wheaton led Broome at the plate with three hits in four at bats, Mancini chipped in with two hits, and six other players contributed with a hit.

Game two began with Broome taking a 5-0 lead after two innings only to see their lead disappear after Cayuga took a 6-5 lead going into the fifth.  The Hornets responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the bottom of the sixth for a 10-7 lead.  The Spartans threatened again but fell short, plating one run before Woolfolk picked up her biggest strikeout of the day to end the game.  Once again Broome got hits from eight players, none bigger than Wheaton's left field home run to tie the game in the fifth.  Mancini, Pernesky-Currier and Wheaton all had a multi-hit game and Heeman led the Hornets in RBIs with three.  Broome improved to 8-4 in Region III and 4-0 in MSAC while Cayuga falls to 4-4 in Region III and 3-3 in MSAC.

The Hornets return home on Thursday for a doubleheader against the Red Barons from Corning CC, scheduled to begin at 3:00 P.M.
