The softball team went 3-1 over the weekend with a sweep of Niagara County at home and a split with Genesee on the road. The Hornets defeated the Thunderwolves at home on Saturday by a score of 5-4 in game one. Niagara rallied in the top of the sixth inning to tie the score at 4-4 only to see Broome answer with a run in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good. Mikayla Garbarino, Abby Mancini and Saralyn Lee each had two hits in the contest to lead the way in the win. RBIs were had by Garbarino, Madison Lapinski (2), Taylor Voorhis and McKenna Wheaton. Broome took a 2-1 lead after the first inning in game two and never looked back, adding two in the third, two in the fifth and two more in the sixth enroute to the 8-4 win. Laurel Pernesky-Currier and Wheaton were ahead of the pack with three hits each followed by Mancini and Lapinski with two hits each. Wheaton picked up her team-leading sixth home run, giving her a 2-RBI game while Lee led the host team with 3 RBIs of her own.
On Sunday Broome traveled to Batavia to take on Genesee CC and came home with a split, dropping the opener 14-10 and winning a thriller in game two, 3-2. Game one of the doubleheader started off with several Hornet miscues which set the tone for the rest of the game. The Cougars took advantage of the five Hornet errors in addition to the eighteen hits they collected for the win. Broome was led by Voorhis in the hit category with three including a double. Garbarino, Mancini, Alea Tiffany and Pernesky-Currier chipped in with two hits apiece. Tiffany had four RBIs on her two hits to lead the Hornets. Broome turned in a much better defensive game in game two, minimizing their errors and turning in a couple of double plays, none bigger than the one to close out the seventh inning and set the stage for a dramatic walk-off home run to end the game. With one out in the top of the seventh Pernesky-Currier fielded a ground ball at short, flipped the ball to Mancini covering second and threw the ball to Wheaton, for what would become the final out of the game. Mancini followed that defensive gem with a walk-off home run, taking the second pitch of the inning to left-center field for the 3-2 Hornet win. Courtney George, Mancini and Pernesky-Currier picked up two hits each while Tiffany led in the RBI department with two.
Broome returns home on Thursday for a doubleheader against Finger Lakes CC, first pitch scheduled for 3:00 P.M.
