The women's soccer team opened up at home on Wednesday afternoon and played Corning CC to a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation and two 10 minute sudden death overtimes. The Red Barons took the early lead at the 26:52 mark on a breakaway goal by Mackenzie Warner, only to have the game tied 50 seconds later on a goal by Marissa Michitti (Binghamton, NY/Seton Catholic), who beat two defenders and placed one in the far netting. Corning scored the go ahead goal in the 36th minute to make the halftime score 2-1.
Both teams battled evenly in the second half until, in the 76th minute, Jordan McGinnis (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) delivered a flighted ball to the head of Allison O'Shea (Marathon, NY/Marathon) to tie the game up and send it to overtime. Neither the Red Barons or the Hornets gave up a goal in the two ten minute, sudden death overtime periods.
Broome came out on top of the penalty kicks, which are used for seeding purposes in post-season play. Michitti, O'Shea, Mackensie Gravelin (Sidney, NY/Sidney) and Megan Canzler (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) all scored PKs for the Hornets. Jolene Krom (Sidney, NY/Sidney) came in goal the last 65 minutes of play and shut down Corning with 13 saves. Paige Finch (Kirkwood, NY/Susquehanna Valley) and Kara Knickerbocker (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) split time in goal the first half, each with 3 saves.
Broome is back on Alumni Field this Saturday for a 1:00 P.M. match against Niagara County CC.
