Mott Advances In National Tournament

Day one of the NJCAA National Championships began Thursday in Peachtree City, GA. Broome's number two singles player, Maria Mott, cruised to an easy quarterfinal victory after a slow start on Thursday. She finished strong winning the last eight games in a row.

Quarterfinal Singles:

1. Erin Volutz (North Hampton CC) def. Daji O'Geen (Broome) 6-1, WD
2. Maria Mott (Broome) def. Kristi Kawa (Ocean County CC) 6-3, 6-0
4. Allison Vargo (Illinois Valley CC) def. Samantha Tassey (Broome) 6-2, 6-4
5. Taylor Pappas (Illinois Valley CC) def. Olivia Borihane (Broome) 6-2, 6-4

Quarterfinal Doubles:

1. O'Geen/Mott (Broome) def. Erin Volutz/MacKenzie Caffrey (North Hampton CC)7-5, 6-1
2. Ali Kutz/Abbey Rupert (Illinois Valley) def. Molly Secord/Tassey (Broome) 6-1, 7-6 (8)

Both Tassey and Borihane had close, hard fought second sets but couldn't quite earn the win in No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Both will compete in the consolation draws tomorrow.

At first doubles O'Geen and Mott played very well after falling behind 4-1 in the first set to win the last 12 of 14 games.

Secord and Tassey lost a heart breaker in doubles.  They fought off several match points to stay in the match but Illinois Valley proved to be just a bit stronger today as they pulled out the second set tie breaker 10-8.

Secord is seeded second in the 2nd singles flight and will play in the semifinal on Friday.
