In a slugfest between two Region 3 opponents that remained scoreless until the 43rd minute, the SUNY Broome men's soccer team was ultimately defeated 4-0 by Jamestown CC on Wednesday.
Both the Hornets and the Jayhawks matched each other in possession, physicality, and strong defensive efforts for the entire first half of the contest as the first goal was not scored until the 43rd minute of play.
A series of timely defensive plays by the Hornets' back line and several brilliant saves by Hornets' keeper Andriy Grave, despite him being bombarded with multiple shots early, kept Jamestown off the board for a long while. However, the Jayhawks finally broke through when a player received a touch from his teammate in the box and was able to push the point-blank opportunity past Grave who was looking for yet another clutch save.
After taking a 1-0 lead into the break, Jamestown quickly added another goal just 10 minutes into the second half when a Jayhawk emerged from the chaos of a scrum in front of the net to find the ball and set up an assist for a teammate.
The score remained 2-0 and the Hornets looked for several opportunities to close the gap, but were stymied by a pesky Jamestown defense. The Jayhawks began to pull away for good in the 77th minute when they took a 3-0 lead and then added a fourth goal in the 82nd minute.
SUNY Broome produced nine shots on the day but only three of them were on target.
In a great effort in goal, Grave made five high-degree-of-difficulty saves to keep the Hornets within striking distance until the very end.
