SUNY Broome Athletics is proud to appoint Cara Martin as the new Head Coach of the softball program.
SUNY Broome Athletics is proud to appoint Cara Martin as the new Head Coach of the softball program.
Martin is a Windsor, NY native who has many ties to SUNY Broome and the local community. She grew up watching the winningest iteration of SUNY Broome softball in program history when longtime head coach Tim Brink led the Hornets to a 316-90 record from 1999-2011. Growing up as a pitcher, Martin's first pitching coach was Rick Forsburg, whose daughter Michelle Forsburg played softball at Broome in 2005 and 2006. The Hornets compiled records of 33-3 and 32-5 in those respective seasons and Forsburg won NJCAA Region III Female Athlete of the Year in 2006.
In Martin's high school playing career, she was a NYSPHSAA Class B Softball State Champion in 2008 and 2011, and was the Class B Softball Player of the Year in 2011. She started a collegiate playing career at the University of Rhode Island before transferring home to Binghamton University for her junior and senior seasons. Martin helped lead the Bearcats to the 2015 America East Softball Championship and was named an NFCA Division I Scholar Athlete in 2015 and 2016.
Martin has extensive experience working with softball players of all ages to help them develop their skills. She was a key piece to a local, successful travel softball organization in the Conklin Raiders, serving as the organization's Lead Pitching Instructor and Assistant Coach from 2013-2021. She has been the Owner of Academy Sports Club since 2018, a training organization that offers one-on-one and group instruction, and small and large skills clinics to develop softball athletes.
Martin was the Director of Fastpitch for Smash It Sports from 2022-2023 and became the Director and Head Coach of a travel organization by the name of FNX Fastpitch in 2024.
Martin will provide the Hornets with multiple years of coaching experience at the junior college level, having been an Assistant Coach for the programs at Onondaga Community College and Herkimer College.
Martin is eager to help restore the SUNY Broome softball program and build it back up to the championship level she witnessed when she was a student-athlete in the area. She is looking forward to spearheading the growth of student-athletes at SUNY Broome as she is committed to helping her athletes on and off the field.
Welcome to the SUNY Broome Athletics family, Cara Martin!
