Hornets Dominate In Doubleheader Sweep

The softball team traveled to Niagara County CC on Sunday and swept a doubleheader by scores of 11-2 and 19-11, respectively.

Game 1 lasted five innings while game 2 lasted six innings.

Sunday was a complete effort offensively and defensively for the Hornets, who combined for 32 hits and committed just two errors across both games en route to the sweep. 

Game 1 was highlighted by a no-hitter from Hornets pitcher Alana Espinoza over the shortened five innings, striking out nine batters and allowing just two unearned runs. At the plate in game 1, Espinoza was 2-4 with two doubles and 2 RBI. Hannah Aton went 3-4 with an RBI and scored two runs. Dayani Lora was 2-3 with a double, driving in one run and scoring two more. She added a diving catch in CF. Icey Jones was also 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI in game 1. The Hornets tallied 12 hits in the games and struck out just one time.

Sarah Espe started on the rubber for Broome in game 2, striking out eight Niagara hitters over 3.0 innings. Mackenzie Collins and Espinoza then combined in relief to deliver the win for Broome. Aton was 4-5 with an RBI in game 2, Makaeyla Ailport was 3-4 with 2 RBI, and Espe added to her dominant pitching performance by going 4-4 at the plate and scoring three runs. Kiara Doyle was 3-3 with a double in game 2 and Espinoza was 1-3 with a triple that enforced the run-rule win for the Hornets after six innings. The Hornets exploded for 20 hits in the game compared to just two strikeouts. 

Overall, Aton was 7-9 on the day, Espe was 5-8, and Jones was 4-8. All players who traveled on Sunday helped contribute to the sweep. 

Broome is next scheduled for a doubleheader at Corning CC on Thursday, at 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
