Broome picked up their first win of the season, a come from behind 5-4 victory in game one against Cayuga CC on Tuesday afternoon but couldn't sweep the Spartans, dropping game two 4-1 at BAGSAI.
The Hornets scored first when Brooke Ladd reached first base on an error, stole second and Jacqualine Bigelow drove her in with a single. The Spatans picked up 2 runs in the third inning to go up 2-1 followed by a two-run fifth inning by the Hornets for a 3-2 lead. The lead was short lived as the visitors matched those two runs and a 4-3 lead that held until the home team's last at bat. In the bottom of the 7th Marrissa Rogers came across the plate for the 4-4 tie and Aryn Bicksler hit a sacrafice fly to drive in Jessica Baron and the 5-4 win. Eight players picked up hits in the game led by Leah Carlini with two hits. Brianna Ramstine, Bicksler, Ladd, Bigelow, Keira Warwick, Rogers and Baron all singled in the contest. Warwick did the bulk of the work on the pitching plate, going 5.2 innings and gave up one earned run while striking out two. Kaitlyn Andrews earned the win, pitching 1 inning and Jenna Gaisford earned her first save coming in to relieve Andrews for the last out.
Game two went to Doray DiLallo and the Spartans. The first two Spartans reached base via a walk and error before DiLallo hit her second home run of the day and a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Errors by Broome once again proved costly as well as stranding runners on base. Bigelow led the Hornets with two hits followed by Ramstine's double, and singles from Warwick, Yasmine Warner and Baron with one each. Gaisford went the distance for Broome, the Oneonta native gave up 3 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 5.
For the second time in four days Broome will face a nationally ranked team, on Thursday the Hornets will face the #2 ranked Red Barons from Corning CC. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3:00 P.M.
