Rough Weekend For Softball

The Hornets lost several heartbreakers over the weekend, suffering three losses in the later innings by a total of four runs.

The first heartbreaker was against the Kats from Erie CC, an 8-7 loss in extra innings. Broome took a 6-5 lead after five innings of play before Erie tied it up at 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh. The Hornets couldn't produce a run in the top of the eighth and the Kats put up the winning run in the bottom of the inning to give the home team the 7-6 win. Julia Kilonsky had the big bat for Erie, the catcher went 3-3 at the plate including two homers and a double. Brooke Ladd, Leah Carlini, Keira Warwick and Marrissa Rogers had the only four hits for Broome, all singles. Jenna Gaisford went the distance for the visitors, allowing eight hits while striking out seven and walking three.

The second game of the roadtrip turned out to be a high scoring affair, 21-12 in favor of the Kats. The Hornets got off to a rough start, giving up 11 runs in the first inning before settling down and outscoring the Kats 12-10 the rest of the game. Ladd and Warwick led Broome with two hits each, both of Ladd's hits were of the two-bagger variety. Aryn Bicksler, Jacqualine Bigelow and Carlini also had hits in the game. Broome was plagued by errors throughout the game, committing ten of them in all.

On Sunday the second heartbreaker came at the hands of Finger Lakes CC, falling 9-7 to the Lakers after holding a 7-4 lead at the end of five. The ensuing inning saw the visitors come up with five runs in the top of the sixth for the win.Brianna Ramstine and Lauren Simmons had two hits each in the game and Bicksler, Bigelow and Carlini each had a hit. Bigelow went yard for the first time this year and Carlini also had a first when she hit a triple. Again, errors came into play with the Hornets committing nine of them. Gaisford pitched well enough to win, giving up four earned runs on eleven hits while striking out nine batters and walking three.

The last heartbreaker of the weekend was a 8-7 loss at BAGSAI against the Lakers. Broome held a 7-5 lead in the top of the seventh before giving up three runs in the bottom half of the inning for the loss. Ramstine paced Broome with three hits, including a double, followed by Bigelow and Carlini with two each and Rogers, Gaisford, Simmons and Kaitlyn Andrews with one hit each. Gaisford and Warwick took the circle and combined for eight strikeouts in the game. Errors, six total, again haunted the Hornets late in the game.
