The softball team split a doubleheader at home with Erie CC on Thursday, losing the first and winning the second.

Broome dropped game one of the doubleheader, 14-6, and won game two in a thriller, 10-9.

The Hornets tallied seven hits in the first contest, and put up a three spot in the third and sixth innings for their six runs.

Hannah Aton was 1-3, drew a walk, and stole a base. Sarah Espe was 1-2 with a sacrifice to drive in a run, and scored a run. Alana Espinoza had a big game at the plate, going 1-3 with a two-run home run. Karissa Camp walked and scored a run. Kiara Doyle was 1-3 with a double and scored a run. Teresa Cruz scored a run, too. Also big offensively was Makaeyla Ailport, going 3-3 with an RBI and a run scored. She also swiped two bases. Espe was effective from the circle for Broome, pitching a complete game of 6.0 innings, allowing just three earned runs, walking just two, and striking out eight Erie hitters.

Broome became the visiting team in the second leg of the doubleheader. The Hornets got the scoring started with three runs in the top of the first. Erie took the lead, 4-3, after two innings. A four spot in the top of the third put Broome back in front, 7-4. The Hornets would cushion their lead to 9-5, before Erie made it 9-7 in the bottom of the sixth. Broome tallied an insurance run in the top of the seventh to go up 10-7. A thrilling bottom of the seventh for Erie, the home team in game two, plated two runners but could not plate a third. Broome held on, 10-9.

The Hornets had 11 hits in the game. Ailport continued her strong evening by going 2-2 with an inside-the-park home run, 2 RBIs, three runs scored, and two walks. Aton was 3-4 with a triple, two stolen bases, and two runs scored. Espe stayed hot by going 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Espinoza wowed at the plate again. She was 2-4 with a double, 3 RBIs, and two runs scored. Doyle had another double, an RBI, and a run scored. Haley Beckwith was 1-3 and drew a walk, while Jozzlyn Hall had an RBI groundout and drew a walk. Espinoza took to the mound in the second game, dealing 7.0 innings, walking no Erie hitters, and striking out seven.

Ailport was 5-5 on the day overall, and flashed the leather in the field with a diving catch in foul territory down the first base line.

The split of the doubleheader brings Broome's record to 4-18 on the season.
