Members of the SUNY Broome Athletics community attended the 20th annual Binghamton University Celebrating Women's Athletics Luncheon on Monday.
The event is hosted by Binghamton University Athletics and is a nationally recognized gathering that serves as a way to honor the dedication of female student-athletes and bolster the women's athletics scholarship fund at the university. The event has raised more than $500,000 to support the Binghamton Bearcats Athletic Association (BBAA) Women's Scholarship.
The featured speaker at the luncheon was a Binghamton University alum and 2024 Paris Olympics semifinalist, Emily Mackay. Mackay is the first BU alum to be the featured speaker at the CWAL event. She left BU as a five-time track and cross country All-American and has since showcased herself to be one of the best women's middle distance runners in the world. Last year, Emily was the bronze medalist in the women's 1,500 at the World Indoor Championships and then qualified for the Paris Olympics in the women's 1,500 and advanced to the semifinals.
Mackay signed professionally with New Balance Boston in June 2022 and she has since become just the 13th American female to run the 1,500 in under four minutes. Her current personal best time of 3:55.90 is good for third all time in U.S. Women's Track & Field history. Mackay, with many ties to the local area, was a 2016 graduate of Union-Endicott High School. Mackay's younger sister is currently a student at SUNY Broome.
Multiple female student-athletes and women in powerful positions within SUNY Broome Athletics were afforded the opportunity to attend Monday's event. Pictured above, SUNY Broome President, Dr. Tony Hawkins, Khala Gray-Motto, Ava Schiff, Heather Hoffman, Colleen Cashman, Hannah Sanford, and Alexis Katchuk posed for a photo with Mackay.
Gray-Motto is a track & field student-athlete at SUNY Broome, Schiff is a two-sport student-athlete as a member of the women's soccer and track & field teams, Hoffman is an Assistant Professor and the Chairperson for Physical Education and Sport Studies at the college, Cashman is the Director of Athletics and a Binghamton University graduate and former student-athlete, Sanford is a track & field student-athlete, and Katchuk is the Head Coach of the SUNY Broome track & field program.
The luncheon, which drew over 900 attendees, presented a great opportunity for several current female track & field student-athletes to connect with a former standout track & field student-athlete who has since become a top professional track & field athlete.
