In 2025, the SUNY Broome track & field program looks to build on a record-breaking 2024 campaign.
At the NJCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field National Championships last season, the women's team placed 13th out of 21 teams, collected four medals, notched four top-8 finishes, and earned two NJCAA All-American honors. The men's program placed 12th out of 17 schools, earned four medals, and set four new school records.
The women's team returns key contributors from last season's team in Ava Schiff and Riley Precourt. The duo is joined by a promising group of freshmen and two sophomores in Amber Neumuth and Carly Hein who are coming off strong 2024-25 cross country and soccer seasons, respectively.
Schiff competed in the 100 meter hurdles, the triple jump, and the shot put at Nationals last season, and earned a medal in the hurdles and the triple jump. The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named Schiff an All-American for the 2024 outdoor track & field season in the 100 meter hurdles and the triple jump. She was also an NJCAA Region III All-Region selection in the triple jump after she took 1st place in the event at Regionals.
Precourt comes off a successful 2024 season that demonstrated continuous improvement from the start of the year to the end of the year. She snagged two top-6 finishes at Regionals in the javelin and the 400 meter run while also competing in the long jump. Finishing the season on a high note, all three results set personal records and season bests for Precourt.
The men's team returns key contributors from last season's team in David Akulis and Yuri Brich. The duo is joined by a strong class of freshmen, many of whom competed in a sport for Broome in the fall season. Demetrius Wilson Jr., Zavien Rouhana, Lucas McPeak, and Braeden Goerlich were accomplished men's cross country athletes this past fall while Charles Larrabee and Avery Palumbo were key members of the men's soccer team.
Akulis finished in the top 10 and took 8th place overall in the high jump at Nationals last year. As a result of his performance, he was named an All-American for the 2024 outdoor season by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. He currently owns the school record for the high jump.
Brich was a vital member of the men's 4x100 meter and 4x400 meter relay teams last season. At Regionals in 2024, both the 4x100 and 4x400 teams set new school records, and the 4x400 team took 3rd place overall. In addition to those school records, Brich also currently holds an individual school record for the 100 meter dash.
The program opens its 2025 season on Friday at the Red Dragon Open hosted by SUNY Cortland.
