Baseball earned their first victory of the season on Saturday, a 9-8 win over visiting Cayuga CC at home in the opener and came up just short in game two, falling 9-7. On Sunday Broome traveled to Auburn for another doubleheader against the Spartans and fell in both games by scores of 13-2 and 15-3.
On Saturday game one appeared to be in the books with the Hornets up 8-2 heading into the top of the seventh inning. Cayuga wouldn't go down easily, scoring 6 runs in the inning to tie it up at 8-8. In the bottom of the seventh Kacper Bielecki singled in Dante Burns to give Broome the dramatic win. Trevor Dennison, Torin Lawrence, Bielecki and Burns all had two hits each in the contest. Joseph Miller had the start and went six innings, gave up two runs and posted five strikeouts. Game two of the doubleheader started out rocky with the Spartans plating six runs in the top of the first and two more in the third for an 8-0 lead before the Hornets plated their first run of the contest in the bottom of the inning. Heading into the bottom of the seventh, and the Spartans up 9-1, the Hornets came up short in their comeback bid scoring six runs in the inning including a grand slam by Thomas Contrata over the left field fence, his first collegiate homerun. Cody Lewis turned in a gutsy performance on the mound, giving up three runs over his six innings of work.
On Sunday the series finished up in Auburn with Cayuga jumping out to early leads both games never to look back. The lone hit in the opener was a two run homer by Burns in the top of the second inning. The nightcap saw the bats come alive with two hits from Miller and Burns, and one each from Dennison, Contrata and Cameron Tom. Doubles were had by Miller and Dennison. Thomas Ricci took the loss in game one and Tom took the loss in game two.
