Women's track & field athlete Aja Jackson has been selected as a winner of the Spring SUNY Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards.
Women's track & field athlete Aja Jackson has been selected as a winner of the Spring SUNY Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards.
Jackson has now been named a SUNY Scholar Athlete of the Year for two out of the three seasons this year, as she adds the Spring 2024 recognition to her winning of the award in Fall 2023. Aja is one of 27 student-athletes being honored with the SUNY Scholar Athlete of the Year Award for combining academic achievement with success in the arena of athletic competition during the 2024 Spring season.
The Spring SUNY Scholar Athlete Awards reward student-athletes from SUNY colleges and universities sponsoring intercollegiate athletics at the four-year and two-year levels who were nominated and voted upon by representatives of their respective institutions and other institutions in the SUNY system. The SUNY Scholar Athlete Awards point out academic and athletic success in 29 different sports and are presented three times per academic/athletic year to correspond with the specific sports of the Fall, Winter, and Spring seasons. The Scholar Athlete of the Year winners in each sport from the Fall, Winter, and Spring will then be nominated for an overall Scholar Athlete of the Year, announced in mid-July, for men's and women's sports in each category.
Jackson was named the winner in the NJCAA category for women's outdoor track & field, and will be receiving a photo plaque to commemorate her accomplishment.
Aja closed her storied career as a SUNY Broome student-athlete by winning 1st place in the women's 10,000 meter run at the NJCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field National Championships for the second year in a row. She also took 2nd place in the women's 5,000 meter run. Her respective times of 40:37.64 and 19:15.53 set school records in the events. The weekend prior, Aja took 3rd place in the women's 200 meter run and 1,500 meter run at the NJCAA Region 3 Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
In her track & field career, Jackson was a five-time NJCAA All-American and a two-time NJCAA National Champion at the National Championships. She also had six top-3 finishes across six events in her career at the Regional Championships. Aja holds the school records for the 400 meter, 800 meter, 1,500 meter, 5,000 meter and 10,000 meter runs. She capped off her academic endeavors with a sparkling 3.78 cumulative GPA as a Business Administration major.
Congratulations, Aja!
