Softball Earns Opening Day Wins On The Road

Team on bus after Mohawk game
vs MVCC

The Hornets picked up a couple of wins on Wednesday in Utica, sweeping Mohawk Valley CC by scores of 5-2 in game one, and 10-1 in game two.  After many delays due to weather and field conditions, the Hornets came out of the gate swinging and took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first off singles by Mackensie Gravelin (Sidney, NY/Sidney) and Madison Lapinski (Owego, NY/Owego Free Academy), and a double by Mikayla Garbarino (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell). Mohawk tied the game in the bottom of the fourth before Broome would answer in the top of the sixth with three runs for the 5-2 final. A Garbarino walk, Lapinski double, Kylee Warner (Binghamton, NY/Chenango Forks) single and Katelyn Page single were responsible for the 3-run inning.  Warner earned the win in convincing fashion, facing 27 batters and striking out 10 of them.

Game two started out much the same with the Hornets (2-0) getting on the board in the bottom of the first off a single by Alea Tiffany (Deposit, NY/Deposit) followed by Garbarino's triple for a 1-0 lead.  The Hawks (0-4) answered back with a run of their own in the top of the second, their lone run of the game.  Broome put the game out of reach with 6 runs in the third and 3 runs in fourth for the final 10-1 score.  The balanced attack saw 9 of Broome's 10 batters get hits, led by Garbarino with two hits, and Warner, Lapinski and Ashley Sisson (Schenevus, NY/Schenevus Central) with 2 RBIs each.

Broome heads back out on the road for a doubleheader against Tompkins Cortland CC on Thursday in Dryden with the pitch scheduled at 3:00 P.M.
