The Hornets are headed to the 2018 Region III Division III Softball Championships for the first time in five years.

Region III Softball Tournament Seeding

The Region III Softball Tournament will get underway this Tuesday, May 8th, with a quartet of semifinal matchups as eight teams will compete for a pair Regional titles and two trips to the NJCAA Division III Softball National Championship in Rochester, Minnesota later this month.  Tuesday's winners will advance to the Region IIIA and Region IIIB Championship Series Friday, May 11th and Saturday, May 12th.  Each series is a best of three format with the first two games scheduled for Friday and the third, if necessary, game scheduled for Saturday.
 

Herkimer College, currently the top ranked team in the nation, earned the top seed after finishing the regular season 37-3 and a perfect 26-0 in Region III.  The Generals will host eighth seeded Columbia-Greene Community College in one of the two Region IIIA semifinal matchups.  The Twins finished the season 17-14 overall and 12-10 against regional competition.  Herkimer swept the regular season double header between the two teams posting a pair of shutouts 8-0 and 10-0.

The four-five semifinal will feature a pair of Mid-State Conference rivals when #5 SUNY Broome Community College travels to Syracuse to take on #4 Onondaga Community College. Onondaga finished the season 21-18 overall, 15-7 in Region III, while Broome finished the season 14-8 overall and in the Region.  The two teams split a double header in Syracuse during the last weekend of the regular season as Broome took the first game 6-4 while Onondaga won the second game 5-3.

Monroe Community College enters the tournament as the tenth ranked team in the nation, the top seed in the Region IIIB bracket, and the second overall seed after 20-10 regular season.  The Tribunes were 14-4 in Region III and will take on Western New York Athletic Conference foe Niagara County Community College in the semifinals.  NCCC finished the season 15-26 overall but were 13-7 in Region III.  MCC won a pair of games from NCCC last week coming from behind to take the first game 4-3 and then pulling away in game two winning 9-1.

The fourth semifinal features third seeded Corning Community College and sixth seeded Erie Community College.  Corning enters the post season 26-10 overall with a 22-8 regional record while Erie finished the season 16-10, 16-8 in Region III.  The Red Barons and the Kats split four games during the regular season as each team picked up a win on the other's home field.  The two teams last met on Tuesday with Erie winning the opener 8-6 and Corning taking the nightcap 12-4,
