Volleyball Comes Up Short In Championship Match

Broome traveled to Sanborn over the weekend for the 2022 Region III Division III Championships hosted by Niagara County CC. The #7 seed Hornets earned their spot in the tournament after a Sub-Regional win over the #10 seed Onondaga. Broome began their quest to repeat as District A Champions against #2 Jefferson CC, #4 Jamestown CC and #5 Erie CC on Saturday before making it to the Championship game on Sunday.

The Hornets started out strong with an upset win over Jefferson 2-1 by set scores of 26-24, 20-25, and 25-20. Melissa Carden led the offense with 12 Kills and Anna Tiberia had 27 assists. Megan Carden led the defense with 22 digs, Gabriella Bishop had a team high 3 aces and Josephine Dure had a team high 3 block assists. 
 
Next up was Jamestown CC, the Jayhawks controlled the match sweeping the Hornets by set scores of 25-21, 25-13, 25-16. Megan Carden led the offense with 10 kills and Tiberia had 23 assists. Brianna Rossi led the defense with 18 digs and,  Bishop, Rossi and Tiberia had 1 ace apiece. Melissa Carden had 1 solo block and 1 assisted block.
 
In the final match of the day Broome faced Erie. Broome swept the Kats with set scores of 25-16, 25-19, 25-19. The sweep advanced Broome to the District A Championship game on Sunday. Melissa Carden led the offense with 16 Kills and Tiberia had 31 Assists. Megan Carden and Rossi anchored the defense with Carden getting 22 digs and Rossi picking up 20. Bishop had a team high 3 aces, Dure had 1 solo block and 1 assisted block and Melissa Carden added 3 assisted blocks to her totals.
 
In the Championship match the Hornets faced Fulton Montgomery CC. The Raiders won 9 straight sets on Saturday, sweeping Genesee CC, Herkimer College and Finger Lakes CC. Broome won the first set 25-19 and Fulton answered by winning the second set 25-21. Broome took the third set convincingly 25-16 but once again Fulton answered back with a convincing win of their own 25-17. The fifth and deciding set went to the Raiders, 15-13, the Hornets falling just short of repeating as the District A Champions. Megan Carden led the offense with 18 kills, Bishop had 15 kills and Melissa Carden had 13 Kills. Tiberia distributed 48 assists and Megan Carden and Casie Kephart had 3 aces apiece. The Broome defense was relentless with several players having over 20 digs including Megan Carden with 37, Bishop with 30, and Rossi, Kephart and Tiberia adding 24 apiece. Dure was a menacing presence at the net with 4 solo blocks and 1 assisted block.
 
After the match, Tiberia and Rossi were named to the All-Tournament Team.
