The SUNY Broome women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win on the road against Finger Lakes on Saturday.
The victory extended the Hornets' winning streak to three games.
On Sophomore Day for the Lakers, Finger Lakes recognized the sophomores from both teams prior to the start of the contest.
Upon the start of the game, Broome came out attacking and had several breakaway attempts that ultimately failed to find the net. Subsequently, Finger Lakes was put on the defensive and posed a challenge for the Hornets' offense.
In the 43rd minute, however, Broome finally broke through for the first score. Jessica Wells scored a goal off a rebound from a free kick taken by Mikayla Smith. The Hornets had a 1-0 lead at the break.
The second half was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams struggling to score. Broome maintained possession for the majority of the game and outshot the Lakers 11-4. Madeline Hyzer made three saves in goal, including a couple of key breakaway saves, to preserve the clean sheet and secure the victory.
After the Hornets' second consecutive shutout win, their record sits at 4-8 on the season. Broome will eye a strong finish to the season with a potential fourth straight win when it hosts Tompkins Cortland on Wednesday, October 16 at Alumni Field.
