Last week, the volleyball team notched a road win against Corning and lost a thriller at home to Monroe - Bronx.
The team sits at 1-1 on the young season as it welcomes the Lazers of Onondaga to Binghamton, NY tonight at 6:00 PM for another home match.
The season started last Tuesday when the Hornets traveled to Corning CC for a Mid-State Athletic Conference matchup. Broome dropped the first of five sets, by a score of 23-25. The Hornets would respond to tie the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 win of their own in set two. Broome again finished with a 25-23 advantage after the third set. Corning stayed alive to even the match at 2-2 with a convincing 25-12 win in set four. The rubber set of the match saw the Hornets earn their own convincing victory, 15-5, and that put the stamp on a 3-2 win in the match.
With a record of 1-0, the Hornets welcomed then-#8 nationally-ranked Monroe University - Bronx to the West Gymnasium for a home match.
The Express jolted out to an early 4-0 lead in the first set, while Broome continued to play catch-up, eventually making it a 7-6 contest and then an 11-8 contest. After that, Broome scored four straight points to take a 12-11 advantage. The Hornets also had an 18-16 lead before Monroe stormed back to go up 20-18 and was eventually up 24-21, needing just one point to win the set. The never-say-die Hornets took a 25-24 lead and then won the first set in comeback fashion, 27-25. In the second set, Broome was up 8-5 before the Express tied it at 8-8. Broome would build up a 13-8 lead from there, before Monroe went on a run to take an eventual 16-15 lead. Later in the set, tied at 19-19, the Hornets built a 22-19 lead but then Monroe jumped in front 23-22. Broome then tied the contest and then went ahead and won the set 26-24.
Monroe was adamant on not falling to Broome at the hands of a sweep, as the Express controlled the majority of the third set en route to a 25-12 victory, making the match 2-1. Broome looked as if it would close out Monroe in the fourth, as after a back-and-fourth middle of the set, the dust eventually settled and Broome had managed a 24-21 lead. While the Hornets needed just one more point to win the set and the match, Monroe scored five unanswered to steal the fourth set 26-24 and set up a winner-take-all fifth stanza. The Express used the momentum from the last-minute rally in the fourth set to come out firing in the fifth, to the tune of a 10-2 lead. The resilient Hornets clawed back to make the score as close as 14-10, however, the Express secured the 15th point to secure the set and a 3-2 win in the match, coming back from an 0-2 deficit.
The Hornets tallied more kills than the Express in two of the five sets, tying the Express in kills in the rubber set. They also committed less errors than Monroe in two of the five sets, tying the Express in errors in the second set. Individually, Ha Tran tallied 32 assists for the Hornets, while Amariah Argro put together a match-high total of 19 kills. Ayshah Almashni tied for the most digs in the match with 17. Argro added 16 for the second most of the match, and Kate Spencer tallied 12, which tied for the third most digs in the contest.
Now sitting at 1-1, Broome will be home against Onondaga tonight at 6:00 PM as mentioned above, and then host a POD on Saturday.
