Softball Splits Doubleheader In Utica

The softball team dropped the opening game of their doubleheader with Mohawk Valley CC 3-0 but came back to win game two 5-1. In game one, the Hornets were held to four hits over seven innings by Jordyn Everett. The Hawks were led at the plate by Cortlynn Jesper who was 2–4 including a lead off homer in the third.

In the second game, Desiree Parry lead off the third inning with a single then scored on the very next play when Shelby Pettersen hit a double to the left center field fence.  Pettersen scored later that inning on a miscue by the Mohawk Valley defense.  In the top of the fifth the Hawks got one of the runs back with a lead off homerun by Morgan Talma to cut the lead to 2–1 at the end of five. In the top of the sixth singles by Jill Burns and Grace Doherty put two Hornets on base with two outs before Cassidy Phillips hit a three-run home run over the right field fence to put the game away for the Hornets. Tia Birtch held Mohawk Valley off balance over the game scattering four hits and walking one.
