Softball Falls Short In Season Opener

Softball finally got their season underway on Monday afternoon in Utica against Mohawk Valley CC and fell short in both games, falling in game one 4-1 before falling in a close one 5-4 in game two.

The opener saw the Hornets get on the board first in the bottom of the third to take a 1-0 lead into the top of the fourth. The lead was short lived as the Hawks plated two runs for a 2-1 lead and added two more in the top of the sixth for the 4-1 win.  Jenna Gaisford took the loss in the circle despite striking out ten. Alana Espinoza, Leah Carlini and Gaisford all singled in the contest and, Brianna Ramstine and McKenna Beers each walked three times.

Game two saw the Hornets comeback fall just short. Mohawk took a 5-0 lead after three innings of play before the Broome bats finally got hot, led by Leah Carlini going 3-4 including a two-run homer and a double. Ramstine and Espinoza both tripled, and Keira Warwick picked up two hits. Broome plated two in the sixth and seventh inning giving them hope but they couldn't find the tying run. Espinoza picked up the loss in three innings and Gaisford closed out the last three striking out three batters for a total 13 strikeouts on the day.

The Hornets are right back on the road Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader in Troy against the Vikings from Hudson Valley CC scheduled for a 3:00 P.M. start.
