Henry Pellicciotti (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) was 4-for-6 on the day, but the Hornets dropped both ends of a double header Thursday at Hornet Field to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute JV team. SUNY Broome (2-6) lost the first game 11-5 and the second 8-6.
RPI took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first of game one as the Engineers pounded out four hits and added a walk and a hit by pitch.
The Hornets answered back with a run in bottom of the first as Joe Wasko (Binghamton, NY/Seton Catholic) reached on an error, and a Jack Burns (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) walk pushed him to second. Wasko then stole third and scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.
Forrest Gilbert (Syracuse, NY/Solvay) led off the bottom of the second with a double, and advanced to third on a wild pitch later in the inning. Gilbert would score on a Jowendrick Sillie (Willemstad, Curacao/SGO Jacques Ferrandi) groundout to pull the Hornets within 4-2.
The Engineers would answer with five runs in the top of the fourth on five hits and a walk.
Pellicciotti singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth for the Hornets and later scored on an Adam Kettle (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) single as SUNY Broome trailed 9-3 after the sixth.
RBI added two runs in the top of the seventh on a pair of hits and were aided by a Hornet error as the Engineers took an 11-3 lead.
The Hornets rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh, when Burns led off with a single and Terrence Garcia (Willemstad, Curacao/Marnix Cas Cora) followed with a double. Burns scored on a Troy Scales (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) ground out, and Garcia scored later in the inning when Pellicciotti, who had singled, was thrown out attempting to steal second.
The Engineers started the scoring again in game two, scoring a run in the top of the first to take a quick 1-0 lead.
SUNY Broome scored five runs in the bottom of the third with Thaylor Aguilera (Caracas, Venezuela/UEN Mariano Picon Salas) leading the inning off with a walk. Jaidorick Woods (Willemstad, Curacao/Regina Paces) singled later in the inning, moving Aguilaria to third. Aguilaria scored later in the inning on a Rachid Martie (Willemstad, Curacao/VSBO St. Jozef) groundout. A Pellicciotti single would score Woods. Cody Burnett (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) followed with a single, and Garcia doubled home Pellicciotti and Woods. Joe Klenchik (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) added an RBI-double, scoring Garcia to give the Hornets a 5-1 lead after three innings.
The top of the fourth would again spell trouble for the Hornets, as they gave up five runs on three hits and an error as the Engineers took a 6-5 lead.
The Hornets tied it in the sixth when Martie singled and Pellicciotti followed with a double. Burnett scored Martie with an RBI-groundout as SUNY Broome pulled even at 6-6.
RPI took the lead for good in the top of the seventh, scoring two runs on two hits and an error.
The Hornets are scheduled to host Niagara County Community College Saturday at 1 p.m
