Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader

SUNY Broome swept a double header Saturday against Corning Community College at Hornet Field. The Hornets (5-7, 3-1) won the first game 10-9 in eight innings, and followed that with a 10-1 victory in the second game. SUNY Broome jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Jowendrick Sillie (Willemstad, Curacao/Regina Paces) led off the game with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Jack Burns (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) followed with another single, scoring Sillie. Burns stole second, and Henry Pellicciotti (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) walked to put runners on first and second. Burns moved to third on a sacrifice fly by Terrence Garcia (Willemstad, Curacao/Marnix Cas Cora), and Pellicciotti promptly stole second to put runners at second and third. Troy Scales (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) drove in both Burns and Pellicciotti with a single to left. The Red Barons scored a single run to draw within 3-1 in the top of the fourth with back-to-back hits, the first two hits of the game surrendered by Garcia. The Hornets would answer in the bottom of the fourth, taking a 5-1 lead when Scales hit a one out double, and Adam Kettle (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) drove him in with a single to right. Three batters later, Kettle scored on a single by Sillie. Corning chipped away at the lead, scoring a single run in the fifth, and adding a pair in the sixth to pull within 5-4. The Red Barons would plate five runs on four hits and a trio of hit batsmen in the top of the seventh, taking a 9-5 lead. Sillie led off the bottom of the seventh for the Hornets and promptly stole second. Burns followed with a walk, and Sillie stole third, his third heist of the game, however Burns was caught stealing at second. Sillie scored on a passed ball bringing the Hornets back within three. Pellicciotti started the rally again, reaching first on a Red Baron error.  Garcia followed with a single, and Joe Klenchik (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) drilled a double scoring Pellicciotti. Two batters later, Kettle drilled a two-out, two-run single into right field to tie the game at 9-9. Todd Cutting (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) followed with a walk, and Joe Wasko (Binghamton, NY/Seton Catholic Central) entered to pinch run for Kettle. Matt Torto (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) drove Wasko home with a single to left to win the game 10-9 for the Hornets. Cody Burnett (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) picked up his third win of the season in relief of Garcia who struck out eight and scattered four hits over five and 2/3 innings. Corning would take a 1-0 lead after the top of the first in game two, but would not plate another run, and would only pick up one more hit in the ensuing six innings. The Hornets would take the lead for good in the bottom of the first. Sillie led off the inning and reached on an error and was quickly on third base after stealing second and third on consecutive pitches. Jaidorick Woods (Willemstad, Curacao/Regina Paces) drove Sillie home with a triple, and then scored on a Pellicciotti single. Two batters later Kettle drove Pellicciotti in with a single, Kettle's fourth RBI of the day. Forrest Gilbert (Syracuse, NY/Solvay) drove Kettle in with a single two batters later to give SUNY Broome a 4-1 lead.Sillie and Woods would hit back-to-back singles in the bottom of the second giving the Hornets runners at first and third. Pellicciotti drove Sillie in with a sacrifice fly to centerfield staking the Hornets to a 5-1 lead. The score would remain 5-1 until the bottom of the sixth when the Hornets plated five runs to take a 10-1 lead. Gilbert reached on a one-out walk, and Thaylor Aguilera (Caracas, Venezuela/UEN Mariano Picon Salas) followed with a single. Torto was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Sillie, who doubled scoring Gilbert and Aguilera. Woods was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Torto would score on a passed ball, and two batters later Wasko would drive home Sillie and Woods. Rachid Martie (Willemstad, Curacao/VSBO St. Jozef) threw a complete game two-hitter for the Hornets, allowing only a single unearned run and did not walk a batter. The Hornets are scheduled to play at Corning Community College Sunday in a double header starting at noon.
