Baseball Splits With Region III Opponent

SUNY Broome split a pair of one run games at Finger Lakes Community College Thursday. The Hornets (3-7, 1-1) took game one 4-3 in eight innings before dropping the second 5-4. The Lakers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth of game one and that would remain the score until the top of the sixth. Jack Burns (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) led the sixth inning off with a walk, and moved to second on a Henry Pellicciotti (Johnson City,NY/Johnson City) ground out. Terrence Garcia (Willemstad,Curacao/Marnix Cas Cora) followed with a walk before Joe Klenchik(Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) delivered a two-RBI double. Klenchik wouldscore later in the inning as Troy Scales (Johnson City, NY/JohnsonCity) reached on an error giving the Hornets a 3-1 lead. Finger Lakes answered in the bottom half of the sixth, scoring two runs on two hits an error evening the score at 3-3. Garcia led of the top of the eighth with a walk for the Hornets, and scored two batters later on a Scales single giving SUNY Broome a 4-3 lead. Cody Burnett (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) picked up his second win in relief this season, taking over for Todd Cutting (Johnson City,NY/Johnson City) who threw 6 and 2/3 while scattering  seven hits and three runs and struck out six but came away with the no decision.


Game two saw the Lakers take a 1-0 lead after the first inning, but the Hornets answered back in the top of the third. A pair of singles by Burnett and Forrest Gilbert (Syracuse, NY/Solvay)put runners on first and second for the Hornets. Burnett was erased on a Rachid Martie (Willemstad, Curacao/VSBO St. Jozef) fielder's choice,and Martie was erased on a Jaidorick Woods (Willemstad, Curacao /Regina Paces) fielder's choice leaving Gilbert at third and Woods at first. Burns would drive in Gilbert with a single to tie the game at1-1. Back-to-back walks to Pellicciotti and Garcia pushed Woods across, giving the Hornets a 2-1 lead after the third inning. SUNY Broome would add another run in the fourth inning when Thaylor Aguilera (Caracas, Venezuela/UEN Mariano Picon Salas) led off the inning with a single. Aguilera would score later in the inning on aMartie single giving the Hornets a 3-1 lead.
The Lakers would take a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning, scoring threeruns on two hits an error and a walk. The Hornets would tie it at 4-4 in the top of the sixth as Gilbert ledthe inning of with a single, and Joe Wasko (Binghamton, NY/SetonCatholic Central), pinch running for Gilbert, would score later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Burns. FLCC won it in the bottom of the seventh, putting together back-to-back two out hits to drive in the winning run.


The Hornets will host Corning Community College Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m
