Baseball Splits Twinbill

SUNY Broome split a double header at Tompkins Cortland Community College Thursday. The Hornets (8-8, 6-2) lost the first game 5-4, and won the second 19-8 in five innings. 

The Hornets struck first in the top of the second when Troy Scales (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) hit a two out single. Adam Kettle (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) was then hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Todd Cutting(Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) and Matt Torto (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) hit back-to-back RBI singles to score Scales and Kettle and give SUNY Broome a 2-0 lead. 

TC3 answered back in the bottom of the second, taking a 5-2 lead on two hits, three walks and an error. 

SUNY Broome cut the lead to 5-3 in the fourth when Joe Klenchik (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) hit a one-out single to right. Klenchik advanced to second on a passed ball, and then stole third base eventually scoring on a passed ball. 

The Hornets rallied in the seventh when Jaidorick Woods (Willemstad, Curacao/Regina Paces) reached on a one-out single.Jack Burns (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) walked to give the Hornets runners at first and second. Woods and Burns stole third and second respectively and Woods scored on a Henry Pellicciotti (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) groundout to draw the Hornets within 5-4. The rally fell short when Panther centerfielder Brian Pfund made a diving catch on a Joe Wasko(Binghamton, NY/Seton Catholic Central) flair to short centerfield. 

Jowendrick Sillie (Willemstad, Curacao/SGO Jacques Ferrandi) led off game two with a single and Burns followed with a triple to score Sillie. Pellicciotti drove Burns home with a single and

Terrence Garcia (Willemstad, Curacao/Marnix Cas Cora) followed with a walk to give the Hornets a pair of runners. Klenchik drove Burns and Garcia home with a double to plate the Hornets third and fourth runs of the inning. Woods was hit by a pitch and two batters later both Klenchik and Woods scored on a two-out Erick Wortman (Vestal, NY/Vestal) single. Sillie followed with a double, his second hit of the inning, and Burns followed with a single, scoring Wortman and Sillie staking the Hornets to an 8-0 lead after the first. 

The Hornets pushed the lead to 11-0 in the second inning when Garcia and Klenchik earned back-to-back walks to start the inning. Woods doubled, scoring Garcia, and Klenchik scored when Forrest Gilbert (Syracuse, NY/Solvay) grounded out. Kettle drove Woods home with a sacrifice fly to center. 

The Panthers scored twice in the bottom of the second on three hits and cut the lead to 11-7 on five hits in the bottom of the third. 

TC3 would add a solo run in the bottom of the fourth, aided by two Hornet errors to draw within 11-8. 

Wortman led off the top of the fifth for the Hornets with a double and then seven straight Hornets reached base by way of either a walk or a hit by pitch. Sillie walked and Burns was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Wortman would score on a passed ball. Pellicciotti was hit by a pitch and Garcia was drilled to force Sillie home. Trey Alvarado (Port Lavaca, TX/Calhoun) walked to score Burns. Woods was hit forcing home Pellicciotti, and Gilbert followed with an RBI-single, scoring Garcia. Two batters later Wortman walked in his second plate appearance of the inning, scoring Alvarado. Sillie then walked to score Woods, and two batters later Pellicciotti singled to score Gilbert, plating the Hornets eighth run of the inning to take a 19-8 lead. 

SUNY Broome will host Finger Lakes Community College Saturday in a double header starting at 1 p.m.
