Volleyball Finishes As Runner-Up At Regionals

The volleyball team completed their appearance in the NJCAA Region 3 Championships with a 2nd place finish in District B.

The Hornets were in action in Niagara Falls on Saturday and Sunday competing in the NJCAA Region 3 Volleyball Championships.

Broome entered the tournament as the #6 seed and faced the #3 seed Erie CC in the District B semifinals. This match was the second meeting between the teams with Broome winning the first 3-2. 

In the first set against Erie, the Hornets opened up a lead but saw that lead evaporate and Erie tied the score 24-24. The Hornets rallied for two points and closed out the set 26-24. After that, the Hornets stayed in control of the match and won the next two sets 25-15 and 25-17, advancing to the finals on Sunday. Anna Tiberia ran an efficient offense and had 28 assists. Gabriella Bishop led the offense with 12 kills. Jaylen Bennett had eight kills in the match and Casie Kephart added seven. Ayshah Almashni led the defense with 12 digs while Tiberia had 11 digs and Kephart picked up 9 digs. Almashni and Kephart each had two aces in the match. Bennett had three assisted blocks and Bishop had two.

In the Region 3 District B Championship, the Hornets faced Fingerlakes CC and Player of the Year Brooke DeGroff. The Lakers also swept their semifinal matchup against Hudson Valley CC to advance to the finals. It was the second time in a week that the Hornets faced the Lakers in a final. Last week, Finger Lakes swept Broome in the MSAC Tournament finals.
 
The first set was a back and forth battle that went to the Lakers, 25-23. The second set was also close with the Hornets winning 26-24. Finger Lakes came out strong in the third set winning 25-17. Broome would battle hard in the fourth set but with the score tied 22-22 the Lakers would get the last three points and win the Championship. Katarina Frommert led the offense with eight kills. Bishop and Kephart each had six kills while Tiberia had 20 assists. The Hornets' defense was on full display with six players picking up double-digit digs (Frommert 23, Tiberia 21, Bishop 18, Kephart 14, Bennett 13, and Almashni 10). Bennett was a force at the net picking up a career-high four solo blocks and two assisted blocks. Mary Pierce added one solo block and two assisted blocks. 
 
Before the tournament began, two Hornets were named to All-Region teams. Bishop received 2nd Team honors and Bennett received 3rd Team honors. At the conclusion of the tournament, Kephart, Tiberia, and Frommert were named to the All-Tournament team.
