Three Hornets scored 20+ points in a 99-97 road loss to SUNY Adirondack on Saturday.
Freshman point guard Amauri Truax led the Hornets in scoring with 25 points on the day. The floor general added nine assists and two steals while going 9-10 from the charity stripe. Truax knocked in two free throws with 1:05 left in regulation to put the Hornets ahead by five. Then Adirondack's Jaylan Sammy knocked down a contested three-pointer from the corner to pull the Timberwolves within two points as 35 seconds remained. Adirondack ultimately tied the contest and sent it into OT when Tyre Williams connected on a runner in the lane just before the buzzer.
Sophomore Antuan Darden opened up the scoring for both teams in OT with an easy layup in front of the rim. It was a big night for Darden as he posted 21 points, 15 rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block. A few plays later, Connor Green converted on a three-pointer off a pass from Darden. With 22 seconds left in OT the Hornets called a timeout and drew up a play as they trailed by two. Truax drove to the basket and converted a difficult layup after a high ball screen from Green and was able to tie it up. With 15 seconds left on the clock the Hornets came up with a huge defensive stop as the clock expired, sending the battle into the second OT.
The second OT remained fast paced and the first few minutes were a defensive battle. With just over a minute left in 2OT, Adirondack was able to connect on a series of free throws, which put the Timberwolves ahead by six. Sophomore Antonio Maria was able to get a steal with 54 seconds left and made the layup in transition to move the Hornets within four. On the next possession, freshman guard Omar Musa got another steal and finished the layup to make it a one-possession game. Maria would secure the rebound on the ensuing Adirondack miss and go coast to coast for the game-tying layup. The next possession for Adirondack resulted in a Hornet foul and two successful free throws for the Timberwolves, putting them up by two with five seconds left. The Hornets were unable to convert on a long pass to Darden and Adirondack held on to a nail-biting 99-97 win.
