The men's basketball team saw its lead slip away late before eventually falling in the final minute against Onondaga on Wednesday, 81-78.
Thanks to a strong opening by the Hornets, the visiting team was able to maintain a modest lead throughout the majority of a tightly-contested first half. Onondaga fought back to take a 32-31 lead, however, with three minutes to go in the half. A 9-2 Lazers run from that point forward made the score 41-33 at halftime.
SUNY Broome opened the second half on an 8-2 run to move within two, 43-41, and eventually took the lead with 12 minutes left. After back-to-back Broome threes handed Onondaga its biggest deficit of the second half, the Lazers fought back to tie the contest with seven minutes left. Multiple lead changes ensued, with Broome regaining the lead and Onondaga rallying each time to trim the deficit.
The Lazers cut it to one point with just under a minute and the ball in their possession. The possession drained the game clock after the Hornets allowed two offensive rebounds to the Lazers, ultimately resulting in a go-ahead layup. On the next Broome possession, Antuan Darden went to the free-throw line for a one-and-one, but missed the front end. The Lazers were sent to the free-throw line and converted both shots to extend the lead to three. After calling a timeout with under 10 seconds left to draw up a play, the Hornets got off a final attempt at tying the game, but a Braeden Davis three-pointer hit off the side of the rim as time expired.
Four players reached double figures in scoring for Broome. Darden had 16 points and five rebounds, Davis had 14 points on 4-6 shooting from three, Amauri Truax had 19 points, and Connor Green had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Despite outshooting the Lazers from the field and from three-point range, the Hornets left nine points at the line by going 11-20 (55.0%) and the Lazers converted 17 of 23 attempts (73.9%) at the charity stripe. The Hornets registered more blocked shots and more assists as a team than the Lakers, but turned the ball over 10 more times than Onondaga in the contest.
The last-minute loss dropped SUNY Broome to 5-9 overall and 3-3 in MSAC play.
