SUNY Broome failed to preserve its lead in the final 10 minutes of its loss to Corning on Tuesday.
The Hornets held a 59-54 lead with just over 10 minutes to play in the second half, but Broome could not fend off the Corning comeback. The Red Barons tied the game and then took the lead just a minute later, setting up a back-and-forth closing stretch of the contest.
The Hornets took a 42-39 advantage into the halftime break. After controlling the tempo to open the second half, Broome's grip was loosened in the final 10 minutes. The Red Barons were ahead 70-68 with six minutes left to play, and then the score was knotted up at 79-79 with 1:32 left. With one minute remaining, the Hornets regained an 82-81 lead.
Corning found a wide-open layup off a cut along the baseline and then forced a SUNY Broome miss and then dropped in another layup to go up by three. Broome regained the ball with the score 85-82 and 11.2 seconds left. A layup with five seconds left made it 85-84. After Corning was fouled on the ensuing inbounds pass, a Red Baron made the first free throw and missed the second, but the defensive rebound was thrown away by the Hornets to end the game.
Antonio Maria led the way for Broome with 22 points and five rebounds. Amauri Truax poured in 16 points. Dejon Williams got the start and was influential with 13 points and seven rebounds. Connor Green achieved his sixth straight double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. All nine Hornets who logged minutes in the contest scored.
Just missing out on a crucial conference win, SUNY Broome falls to 7-12 overall and 5-4 in MSAC play with five games remaining in the regular season. It will welcome Finger Lakes into the Hornets' Nest on Thursday.
