As the holiday break approaches, the SUNY Broome men's basketball team sits at 2-7 through nine games. 16 games remain in the regular season for SUNY Broome, nine of which will be at home in the Baldwin Gymnasium.
The Hornets began the season 1-0, picking up a crucial conference win over Cayuga on the road with a 61-59 win in OT. Three of the next four games extended into an OT period for the Hornets. After falling 77-67 on the road to Corning CC, SUNY Broome lost 99-97 in 2OT at SUNY Adirondack, won 115-102 in 2OT at St. John Fisher JV, and lost 90-88 on a buzzer-beating three-pointer to Division II Erie CC in its home opener.
After a tough weekend on the road against Mohawk Valley and Herkimer, two teams ranked in the top four in the latest NJCAA Division III Men's basketball national poll, the Hornets returned home for two games to close out the fall semester. Holding a lead for several moments in each contest, SUNY Broome ultimately fell to Region 19 opponent Northampton CC and fellow Region 3 opponent Hudson Valley CC.
At the end of the fall semester and after nine contests, SUNY Broome is being led in scoring by Antonio Maria. The sophomore guard is averaging 19.1 ppg, 4.0 rpg, and 2.4 apg while shooting 47.3% from the field and 37.5% from three. Connor Green is second in scoring and averaging a double-double with 13.3 ppg and 11.0 rpg, while shooting 47.1% from the field, 41.2% from three, and 77.4% from the charity stripe. The second piece of a dynamic frontcourt duo with Green, Antuan Darden is also averaging a double-double with 13.2 ppg and 10.1 rpg, shooting 68.9% from the field and 36.4% from three. Freshman point guard Amauri Truax has given the Hornets a fourth 10+ ppg scorer, averaging 12.7 ppg and 4.1 apg on 41.9% shooting from beyond the arc.
After the new year, the Hornets will be back in action against Region 3 and Mid-State Athletic Conference foes Jefferson CC and Tompkins Cortland CC on January 11 and 12.
