The women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Jefferson CC in their 2023 season opener in Watertown on Sunday in a MSAC matchup. The Hornets faced Cannoneers at Jefferson's newly constructed turf complex. The first half saw a back-and-forth battle between the teams, but neither could find the back of the net leaving the score tied at halftime.

In the 51st minute, Jefferson CC broke the deadlock with a quick free-kick play, taking a 1-0 lead. They extended their lead to 2-0 in the 85th minute with a spectacular shot across the box.

In the 86th minute, Olivia Laney emerged from the back line and delivered a powerful cannon that was deflected from Jefferson's goalkeeper, and seized by Maci Spencer. Spencer secured the Hornets' goal by firing the ball into the net.

Broome gained traction and fought back valiantly. Despite their efforts, time wasn't on their side, and the match concluded with the Hornets narrowly trailing.

Freshman goalkeeper Crista Schanbacher had an impressive debut for Broome soccer, saving 11 out of 13 shots.

Next up, the Hornets take on #3 Genesee CC in their home opener at Alumni Field on this Saturday beginning at 1:00 P.M.
