The Kats compete in Region III of the NJCAA like the Hornets, but play at the Division II level for basketball.
The Hornets held a 16-14 lead after the first quarter of their home opener. The Kats responded with a 16-12 advantage in the second quarter, however, to take a 30-28 lead into the locker room. SUNY Broome continued to compete and stay within striking distance throughout the third quarter, trailing just 46-38 entering the fourth. The comeback bid fell short as Erie would hang on for the 57-46 final.
Sophia Ashman was brilliant for the Hornets in logging 27 points, eight rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Madeline Hyzer had a remarkable 15 rebounds. Zephora Brouillette just missed a double-double with eight points and 11 rebounds. Lillian Monroe had six points and five rebounds.
The Hornets will be on the road on Saturday and Sunday against Mohawk Valley CC and Herkimer College, the teams currently possessing the fourth and third best records in Region III, respectively.
