The women's basketball team hosted the Spartans of Northampton CC on Wednesday, handing them just their second loss of the season.
The game was tight throughout, with both teams holding a lead for certain stretches. Jayla Marke hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the first quarter by bringing the Hornets within four, 13-9. SUNY Broome used that momentum to take a 27-25 lead into halftime. The Hornets continued to hold of Northampton's relentless comeback attempt, taking a 41-37 into the fourth quarter.
A crucial and-one by Zephora Brouillette broke a 51-51 tie and put SUNY Broome ahead 54-51. Trailing 54-53, the Spartans went to the charity stripe and evened the game at 54-54. The Hornets got the ball back with 34.3 seconds left, and a shooting foul plus a technical foul by Northampton allowed for four straight SUNY Broome points. The Hornets held on for the upset win, 58-54.
The win, fueled by a total team effort, was huge for the Hornets in helping them get back on track after two difficult matchups over the weekend with Mohawk Valley and Herkimer.
Brouillette and Marke had collegiate bests in scoring in the contest. Brouillette also logged a collegiate high in rebounds, going for 19 points and 15 rebounds on the night. Marke added 15 points.
The Hornets will be back in action on Sunday when they host the Vikings of Hudson Valley CC at 1:00 PM.
