At the conclusion of the fall semester and after nine games, the women's basketball team owns a record of 2-7. 14 games remain in the regular season for SUNY Broome, eight of which will be at home in the Baldwin Gymnasium.
The Hornets opened their season with a close, four-point loss on the road to a conference opponent in Cayuga CC. After dropping the next two games, the Hornets earned their first win in blowout fashion, dominating SUNY Adirondack 69-22. Following another three losses, the Hornets got back in the win column with an upset victory on their home court. SUNY Broome took down the previously 9-1 Northampton CC Spartans, 58-54. Most recently, the Hornets suffered a loss at home to Region 3 opponent Hudson Valley CC to close out the semester.
Behind Sophia Pelton who averaged 11.5 ppg and 6.5 rpg over two games before suffering a season-ending injury, SUNY Broome is being led in scoring by freshman guard Sophia Ashman with 10.6 ppg. Ashman has had two 20+ point games this season, collecting 22 points in the win over Adirondack and 27 points against Division II Erie CC.
Freshman guard/forward Zephora Brouillette is flirting with double-double averages, having compiled a line of 8.1 ppg and 8.9 rpg through nine contests while also shooting 81.8% from the free-throw line. Brouillette has reached double figures in rebounds in five games, achieving a double-double in two of them. She went for 16 points and 12 rebounds in the win over SUNY Adirondack and then exploded for a 19-point 15-rebound performance in the upset over Northampton. Lillian Monroe has chimed in with averages of just about six points and five rebounds per contest, and she's collected seven or more rebounds three times this season. Jayla Marke has scored in double figures twice for the Hornets this season, including a collegiate-high 15 points against Northampton.
Following the new year, the Hornets will host two conference opponents in Jefferson CC and Tompkins Cortland CC on January 11 and 12.
