The women's basketball team battled for four quarters and an OT period on Sunday, ultimately falling 65-57 to Fulton-Montgomery.
The Hornets had a strong first half, jumping out to a 15-6 lead after the first quarter. SUNY Broome remained ahead at halftime, leading 29-18. After a tightly-contested third quarter, the Hornets went into the fourth with a 41-27 cushion. However, the Raiders doubled up Broome in the fourth, 28-14, eventually tying the game at 55-55.
The Hornets possessed the ball in front of their basket with 11.1 seconds to go and the score knotted up. They drove the ball into the lane and took a runner that came up short, but Fulton-Montgomery had a three-pointer hit off the side of the rim in its attempt at a game winner, sending the contest to OT. Fulton-Montgomery would outscore SUNY Broome 10-2 in the overtime period after Hornets' point guard Sophia Ashman fouled out with two minutes left in regulation. The Raiders came away with a 65-57 win on the road.
Lillian Monroe was the leading offensive force for the Hornets, achieving a collegiate-best 19 points on an efficient 7-16 shooting. Zephora Brouillette also reached double figures with 11 points. Madeline Hyzer led the rebounding effort for Broome.
A tough loss drops the Hornets to 2-11 on the season. The team will try to get back on track on Wednesday when it hits the road for a conference matchup against Onondaga CC.
