Costly errors allowed Onondaga to pull away from Broome in two straight games on Tuesday.
The Lazers took the first game 13-4 after a seven-run 5th inning, and used a four-run 4th inning to follow with an 8-4 win in the second game.
Game 1: SUNY Broome 4, Onondaga 13
In the first game of the day, Onondaga logged 14 hits compared to six by Broome. The Lazers' offensive fortune was aided by four SUNY Broome errors. After the Hornets scored first and went up 2-0, Onondaga countered with four runs. Broome tied it in the 3rd, only for the Lazers to retake a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the inning. Onondaga used a big inning in the bottom of the 5th to plate seven runs and open up the game.
Peyton Farrell received the start on the bump for SUNY Broome. He struggled through 4.1 innings as the Hornets' defense struggled to make plays behind him at times. Farrell struck out four while only walking two. Evan Persbacker relieved Farrell, allowing just one run over 1.2 innings.
Three different Hornets recorded an RBI in the contest. Jason Kithcart Jr. was 1-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Kaiden Cannistra was 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Jacob McTigue scored a run and drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
Game 2: SUNY Broome 4, Onondaga 8
In the nightcap, the box score reflected a more evenly matched contest. SUNY Broome registered eight hits and Onondaga collected nine, and both teams committed three errors. The decisive factor was a four-run 4th inning by the Lazers that altered the momentum of the game. Broome held a 4-2 lead before Onondaga jumped in front 7-4, and the Hornets could not recover.
Joseph Chermak was the starting pitcher for the Hornets in game two, and he was effective in limiting the damage to two earned runs over 2.1 innings on three walks and three strikeouts. McTigue dealt 3.0 innings in relief and allowed just two earned runs, striking out two.
Darlyn De Los Angeles was the hot bat for SUNY Broome in the contest. He was 3-4 with a double and two RBIs. Santino Michitti also drove in a run. Nicholas Ragonese scored a run and stole two bases.
With the two defeats SUNY Broome fell to 3-5 on the season and 3-3 in conference.
